Facebook Updates Timeline Cover Rules

facebookYou can now put promotional and contact information on your company’s Facebook timeline cover.

Facebook has loosened its policies on what can be displayed on covers. According to Inside Facebook, businesses are now allowed to show:

  • Calls to actions
  • Contact info
  • Pricing/purchasing information

For those new to Facebook, timeline covers are the large image that appears at the top of a profile. Previously, businesses were forbidden from putting promotional and contact information in this area. You can see an example of a cover highlighted in red below.

Despite this change in the rules, timeline covers must still maintain the 20 percent text limit. Here are the rules straight from the Facebook Page Guidelines.

All covers are public. This means that anyone who visits your Page will be able to see your cover. Covers can’t be deceptive, misleading, or infringe on anyone else’s copyright. You may not encourage people to upload your cover to their personal timelines. Covers may not include images with more than 20% text.

What This Means

For businesses of all sizes, this is great news. Facebook has opened up a huge piece of real estate for you to start featuring products, website URLs and calls to actions to “Like” your page.

The timeline cover is one of the first things people will look at when they visit your page. Plus it gets high visibility in people’s news feeds when you update the image.

It’s time to start taking advantage of the new rules. Update your timeline cover with text that features call to actions and contact information. Consider using your timeline cover for featuring:

  • A product of the week with discount pricing information.
  • A call to action to get people to “Like” your Facebook Page. Be sure to include a REASON people should “Like” your page.
  • A URL to your website to drive more traffic.

The important thing is to get into the habit of updating your timeline cover to improve visibility of your Facebook page. As you’re changing the cover, pay attention to the analytics. It will help you figure out what types of images and messaging is effective.
