Google Hummingbird: Major Change in How Google Ranks Websites

Google Hummingbird: Major Change in How Google Ranks WebsitesGoogle has a new way of determining the answers you get when you perform a search query.

This is a profound change, one of the most significant they have made in years.

Since everything in corporate America nowadays needs a code name, Google calls the change “Hummingbird.”

Google’s objective behind the change is to provide searchers with better answers to increasingly complex questions posed in search queries. The goal is to help Google better understand concepts rather than words. People now enter lengthy questions into the search box instead of just a few words. It’s also designed to help with voice recognition technologies, which so many people use via their smartphone to access Google search.

Google began rolling out these changes a month ago, and announced them to the public on September 26, 2013. They say it’s the most significant change they’ve made in 3 years, impacting about 90% of the search requests it receives.

We’ll be writing more about what you can do to succeed with Google Hummingbird in upcoming posts. If you’d like to read more detailed information, check out this insightful post written by Danny Sullivan and published on Search Engine Land.
