Pinterest Introduces New Web Analytics Tool

Posted on: April 8th, 2013 by admin No Comments

pinterest

Pinterest recently released an all new web analytics tool. It allows you to track the number of images and videos from your website that people are sharing on Pinterest.

For those unfamiliar with Pinterest, it’s a social media website that allows users to create, share and manage online image collections. For example, if someone likes an image on your website, they can share it – known as pinning – with their following on Pinterest. You can get a crash course on the site by reading our post here.

The new analytics offering that Pinterest recently rolled out makes it easy to track sharing activity and learn what types of images your audience likes. With this new feature, you can find out the number of people:

  • Sharing (pinning) images from your website
  • Looking at pins (pins are images shared on Pinterest)
  • Clicking on content

You’ll also be able to discover what pins get the most interaction, so you can create relevant content on your website. You can get a taste for the new analytics feature in the image below.

Pinterest has created an excellent video that walks you through the new platform. You can see it below.

In order to get the new analytics tool, you’ll need to take the following steps.

  1. Get access to the new Pinterest layout. You can do that by visiting here.

How Facebook’s Modified News Feed Impacts Your Marketing

Posted on: April 1st, 2013 by admin No Comments

facebook news feed

Facebook recently announced a major overhaul of its News Feed that impacts how people will see posts.

The new News Feed design features larger photos, links and advertisements. It also allows people to create custom feeds on particular topics like music as well as status updates from close friends. The mobile app’s feed is similar to the updated computer-based version.

Facebook is currently in the process of slowly rolling out it out. You can sign up for it here.

How This Change Impacts Your Business

1. Images & Video Are Very Important

With the change, visual content is going to be more of a priority. Facebook is now giving a huge amount of real estate to images and videos. As an example, when people “Like” your company’s page, your profile picture and Timeline Cover will appear in their News Feed.

For your business, this means you should be regularly posting new images on your Facebook page whether it’s status update images, photo albums or even your Timeline Cover.

You want to do this because it improves your chances of showing up in the News Feeds of your followers.

2. There’s More Competition on the News Feed

The update makes it easy for people to create separate streams on different topics. One might be “Close Friends,” another might be “Companies I follow” or “Bands I like.” The important thing is that people may spend more time on some of these specialized feeds because it’s giving them the information they feel is important to them.

It’s still too early to determine whether people will spend more time on these specialized feeds as opposed to the general one that shows all posts.

What is important is providing information that is relevant to your followers. It improves your chances of getting on a custom News Feed that your followers actually pay attention to.

3. You Can’t Ignore Mobile

The update means that the News Feed will look similar whether you’re on a computer, smartphone or tablet computer.

It’s time to embrace mobile. More and more people are accessing Facebook on smartphones and tablet computers. It’s time you developed content that embraces mobile check-ins and the smaller screens.

How to Optimize Your Content

While Facebook has not released a date when everyone will get the new News Feed, you should start optimizing your content for the update. Here are a few things that you can do.

  • Post content that is RELEVANT to your following – If you want people to keep you in their News Feed, post things that are relevant to them. Provide valuable information that informs, entertains and motivates them to share with others.
  • Post more pictures and videos – Your posts will take up more screen space if you use images and videos. It’s a way to put your content front and center for your followers.
  • Shorten your text postings with photos and videos – The new format now overlays text on photos and videos. Too much text can be hard to read and distracting. Keep text to a sentence or two.
  • Regularly update your Timeline Cover – If you’re looking to get attention, regularly update your Timeline Cover. It’s really important now that you can include discounts and call to actions on your covers.
  • Encourage mobile check-ins – Mobile check-ins are now more visual on the new News Feed. It’s a great way to grab the attention of followers. Encourage customers to check-in to your business. It’s one Sway to expose your company to others on Facebook.

Following these tips will help you optimize Facebook content. For even more social media marketing tips, follow us by “Liking” the Right On – No Bull Marketing Facebook Page.

Facebook Updates Timeline Cover Rules

Posted on: March 29th, 2013 by admin No Comments

facebookYou can now put promotional and contact information on your company’s Facebook timeline cover.

Facebook has loosened its policies on what can be displayed on covers. According to Inside Facebook, businesses are now allowed to show:

  • Calls to actions
  • Contact info
  • Pricing/purchasing information

For those new to Facebook, timeline covers are the large image that appears at the top of a profile. Previously, businesses were forbidden from putting promotional and contact information in this area. You can see an example of a cover highlighted in red below.

Facebook Timeline Cover

Despite this change in the rules, timeline covers must still maintain the 20 percent text limit. Here are the rules straight from the Facebook Page Guidelines.

All covers are public. This means that anyone who visits your Page will be able to see your cover. Covers can’t be deceptive, misleading, or infringe on anyone else’s copyright. You may not encourage people to upload your cover to their personal timelines. Covers may not include images with more than 20% text.

What This Means

For businesses of all sizes, this is great news. Facebook has opened up a huge piece of real estate for you to start featuring products, website URLs and calls to actions to “Like” your page.

The timeline cover is one of the first things people will look at when they visit your page. Plus it gets high visibility in people’s news feeds when you update the image.

It’s time to start taking advantage of the new rules. Update your timeline cover with text that features call to actions and contact information. Consider using your timeline cover for featuring:

  • A product of the week with discount pricing information.
  • A call to action to get people to “Like” your Facebook Page. Be sure to include a REASON people should “Like” your page.
  • A URL to your website to drive more traffic.

The important thing is to get into the habit of updating your timeline cover to improve visibility of your Facebook page. As you’re changing the cover, pay attention to the analytics. It will help you figure out what types of images and messaging is effective.

How to Optimize Your Company Facebook Page for Graph Search

Posted on: March 8th, 2013 by admin No Comments

graph search

Facebook is looking to change the way people search for things online with its new Graph Search tool.

Graph Search is an internal search engine that allows users to find relevant information within Facebook. This might include searching for information on restaurants or other local businesses. You can find out more details by reading “What Facebook Graph Search Means for Your Business.”

The important thing to know is that people can use Graph Search to help with their purchasing decisions. As an example, suppose a person in Kansas City is looking for good BBQ. They can type “BBQ restaurants in Kansas City” into Graph Search and possibly see the top BBQ restaurants that their friends like on Facebook.

This has powerful ramifications on a person’s purchasing decisions. According to Digital Buzz, 81 percent of customers already reach out to family and friends on social networking sites for purchasing advice. Just imagine what they’ll do if they’re searching for a business and they see one of their Facebook friends likes a certain company’s page.

Facebook Graph Search hasn’t been completely rolled out to everyone yet. In fact, you’ll only get Graph Search results for certain types of businesses such as restaurants, car dealerships, book stores and bars.

However this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t optimize your Facebook page for this new feature. Facebook is expected to expand this feature. The important thing is to get your business ready for Graph Search now so you’ll have a leg up on the competition.

To help you get ready, here are the most important optimization tips for Facebook Graph Search.

1). Make Sure Your Business Is Listed Under the Proper Category

Facebook organizes company pages based on the category that you’ve selected for your business. You want to make sure that you select the proper category, so people can find your business using Graph Search.

To check the category of your business page, follow the steps below.

  • On your business page, click “About” (Red Box).

Facebook Graph Search

  • Click “Edit” Basic Info.

  • Choose the appropriate category and click the “Save” button at the bottom of the screen.

Note: If you want people to be able to check-in to your business using their smartphones, you must select the “Local Business” category. We’ll cover check-ins in more detail under tip #5.

2). Check Your Business Address

Graph Search results are often based on location. If you don’t have the address for your business listed in your profile, you’re not going to appear for location-based Graph Searches. To add or modify your address information, follow the steps below.

  • On your business page, click “About.”
  • Click “Edit” Basic Info.
  • In the “Address” box, fill in the correct information.

3). Fill Out the About Section

Facebook will include a portion of the “About” section in the Graph Search results. It’s important to fill out your “About” section, so customers understand your business. As you’re filling it out, be sure to include important keywords to improve search results.

By adding keywords into the “About” section, it could help to improve your search engine rankings as well as possibly your Graph Search Rankings. Facebook allows you to put more than 20,000 characters into your “About” section. There’s no need to meet this high figure. Somewhere between 2,000 and 3,000 characters is probably enough to write a thorough description that includes important keywords.

To add or change the “About” information, follow the three steps below.

  • On your business page, click “About.”
  • Click “Edit” Basic Info.
  • In the “About” box, fill in the information.

4). Use Keywords

We briefly mentioned keyword use in the previous section. However, keywords deserve their own billing because they are very important. You’ll want to include relevant keywords in your “About” section as well as occasionally in status updates. It’s an excellent way to improve your search rankings.

It’s important to note that you shouldn’t try to stuff keywords into your “About” section and status updates. The primary goal is to communicate with Facebook users. You don’t have to put keywords in every single status update. However, you’ll want to do in about 25 to 30 percent of your posts.

If you’re having trouble coming up with keywords, think about phrases that customers might use to describe your company, products and services. You can also use a keyword research tool like Google’s Keyword Tool to get better ideas.

5). Get More Likes

The more likes that you have the better. That’s because a user’s network of friends on Facebook influences their Graph Search results. You can get more likes by:

  • Advertising your page on Facebook.
  • Offering coupons and information that’s relevant to your customers.
  • Adding Facebook Like buttons to your website and blog.

By getting more followers for your Facebook page, you’ll improve the chances of it appearing near the top of certain Graph Search queries.

6). Encourage Check-Ins

facebook check-inFacebook ranks Graph Search results based on category, location and number of likes as well as check-ins.

If you’re unfamiliar with the term “check-in,” it’s a feature that lets people share the location of a place they’re visiting with their smartphone. You can see an example in the photo to the right.

If you’re searching for let’s just say “Car Dealerships in Scottsdale, Arizona,” you might see Facebook pages of car dealerships that some of your Facebook friends have checked-in with their smartphone.

For more check-ins, create promotions that encourage customers to check-in to your business with the smartphone. Also get employees to regularly check-in.

7). Post and Tag More Photos & Videos

Facebook Graph Search makes it easy for people to search for photos and videos. Posting photos and videos that are relevant to your audience could help to improve your results for multimedia-based searches. Be sure to properly tag photographs and videos with your business name and include a description with important keywords.

The Facebook Help Center provides a great tutorial on how to tag photos and videos on Facebook.

8). Get a Username

Do you see the unique URL in the photo below? The “RightOnNoBull” portion of the URL is called a username. This helps with Google search results, and experts believe it may help with Facebook Graph Search results.

To set up a unique username, visit https://www.facebook.com/username. You can then select your page and create a custom username. Create one that is as close to the name of your business.
