Facebook Rolls Out New Insights Feature

Friday, March 19th, 2010

Social media giant, Facebook, has begun sending page activity summaries to page administrators via email.

If you’re one of the thousands of Facebook page administrators, you may have noticed something new delivered to your email inbox this week. Facebook has begun quietly sending out a summary of page activity to page administrators. While there has been no official announcement from the social media company, many recipients of these new emails have taken to the web to express their pleasant surprise at the new feature.

These emails are very basic at this time and only include text information but page administrators should find them very useful in keeping track of their page activity and interactions. The updates also serve as a reminder that administrators need to be working to create and maintain activity on their pages. The email summaries contain the following information:

  • New fans for the week plus the total number of page fans
  • The number of new Comments, Wall Posts, and Likes for this week and last
  • The number of pages views for this week and last

The emails also contain useful links for updating and advertising a Facebook Page as well as their Facebook Insights. While this new feature is still in the development phase, Facebook administrators can look forward to these summaries each week.

Twitter More Important Than Ever For SEO

Monday, November 16th, 2009

Recent announcement by Google and Bing makes Twitter an excellent SEO tool.

If your company is not already using Twitter as an internet marketing tool to generate profits than here is another great reason to get started.

We mentioned recently that both Google and Bing are starting to include Twitter posts (tweets) into their normal search results pages.  This means that whenever someone enters in a search term, they will not only see relevant websites, but they will also find tweets that relate to what they are searching for.

By regularly tweeting about your relevant search terms, you can have your Tweets on the first page of Google and Bing, even if your website isn’t there yet. From there, you can draw people to your website, and eventually turn them into customers.

Here are a few tips to write tweets that are search engine optimized:

  • Include key phrases in tweets – these are the words people are using to find you.
  • Don’t spam – keep your tweets interesting and relevant.
  • Tweet regularly – recent posts get priority for search results.
  • Use hashtags – # is used in Twitter to identify a specific topic such as #cars. Find topics that relate to your post at http://hashtags.org/.

Using Twitter for SEO can generate huge results for your business. If you have already seen results or have questions, leave a comment below.

Twitter and Other Social Media Embraced by Google and Bing

Monday, November 9th, 2009

Search engines Google and Bing to start indexing status updates from social networking sites.

This year’s Web 2.0 Summit featured some big social media news from search giant Google and its up and coming rival, Bing.

First at the Summit, Microsoft announced that Bing has formed deals with both Facebook and Twitter to index status updates and serve them for relevant searches. Additionally, a beta version of Bing’s Twitter search page was released as a way for searchers to better find tweets.

Not to be outdone, Google announced its own deal with Twitter during the Summit to index tweets on the Google search engine. These changes are expected to be made active in the next few months. They also announced Google Social Search, a real-time search indexing page that will allow users to search for content created by people in their social network.

At this time Google has not formed a deal to index Facebook status updates. However, since only public updates will be indexed by Bing (the majority of status updates are private), this is not expected to be a huge problem for Google.

Twitter Revises its Terms of Service and Opens the Door for Advertising

Friday, September 25th, 2009

One of the most popular micro-blogging sites in the world is now looking to profit from its services.

Twitter recently changed their terms of service to possibly allow advertising on their website. Biz Stone, the founder of Twitter, said they are leaving the door open for advertising and that they’d like to keep their options open. Twitter remains conscientious about annoying their rapidly growing user base with tons of ads.

With a user base of over 45 million and still rapidly growing, it’s difficult to resist the revenue that can be generated from advertising. However, there are some potential problems facing advertisers on Twitter. The content on Twitter may create branding issues for advertisers as the quality, validity and potential offensiveness of user posts may thwart their attempts to create positive brand associations.

Twitter’s new terms have opened the door for “targeted advertising,” but they have yet to deploy any such ads to their users.

For more information check out what Twitter has to say on their Blog.

How to Use Social Media to Get Media Attention

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

Watch yesterday’s free webinar on how to use social media to generate press, buzz, and prospects.

Yesterday on the Right On – No Bull Internet Marketing Best Practices Webcast Channel, David Oates, President of Stalwart Communications, gave a fascinating presentation about the death of the press release. According to David, the rise of social media coupled with the decline of the news media has nearly eliminated the usefulness of press releases to generate buzz and gain the attention of the media.

Public relations experts and business executives alike are now turning to social media sites like Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn to send important news items directly to their customers as well as important media contacts.

Using the tactics David suggests during his presentation, companies can move towards ditching the press release and using social media exclusively to gain a level of public relations success that exceeds expectations.
