Text Messaging More Popular Than Ever With Adults

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

A new survey shows texting isn’t just for teenagers anymore.

Adults Text Messaging

If you think that texting is just for teenagers and young adults, think again. According to a survey by mobile messaging company Tekelec, text messaging is competing head-to-head with email as the preferred communication method amongst adults.

The survey, which collected data from 500 people of all ages in North America and Europe, contained a number of important findings including:

  • 60% of people over 45 text as often as they make calls from their cell phone.

  • 32% of people across age groups prefer texting versus 33% who prefer email.

  • 80% of people across age groups believe texting is quicker then email or voice message for getting a response.

  • 40% of women communicate mainly via texting versus 30% of men.

With texting this popular, it’s no wonder more and more companies are moving towards mobile marketing as a way to reach their customers.

The ABC’s of IM and Text

Learn the basics of abbreviated text messages and IMs.

Texting

IM and text messaging are no longer exclusively used by tweens and teens.  All ages use the technology to communicate personally and professionally. Allowing business users to communicate in real time, even at long distances, IM can prove to be a convenient and money saving way to keep in touch with co-workers and customers in comparison with telephone conversations.

One of the benefits of IM and text is the speed at which you can get out messages. Abbreviated words make it possible to type out sentences in fewer letters. Here is a guide for those of us that are still a bit in the dark concerning abbreviated words within text and IM:

FYI- For your information

This of course is only a small sample of the more commonly used abbreviations; there are literally thousands of them. As you see, most of them make sense. They are expressed with the first letters for the words they represent, or in the case of numbers, they sound like the word they represent.

In other words…KISS (Keep it simple sweetheart;)

OO (over and out)
