The Future of Mobile Marketing and Social Media

Mobile devices could become the main hub for social media communication according to new report.

With iPods, Blackberries, and similar mobile devices gaining in popularity every day, it’s no wonder that many analysts are suggesting that mobile devices will soon replace PCs and laptops as the most important social media tool.

A new report from Forrester Research suggests that mobile phones may soon become the hub for all social media communication. Because it allows users to participate in the conversation immediately from anywhere and because of its widespread use, phones have a clear edge when it comes to communication.

Already Facebook Mobile has 65 million users, triple what they had eight months ago. Additionally, a number of cell phone manufacturers are forming partnerships with social media sites to create an integrated social media experience.

Even cell service providers are getting into the social media mix. Recently AT&T unveiled an app called Social Net which allows customers customized feeds and integration with Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace.

For the mobile marketer, this trend presents a unique opportunity to reach millions of people who have adopted this new medium. However, it also presents a great many problems. Marketers must overcome issues presented by both social media marketing and mobile marketing in order to have success. Only those with the budgets, the capabilities, and the right audiences should risk experimenting.
