Can Social Media Sharing Improve Google Search Rankings?

There’s a new study out that says sharing website addresses on social media may boost search engine rankings.

The study was done by Branded3, and it’s titled, Tweets vs. Rankings. They found that sharing website addresses on Twitter improved search rankings on Google.

The graph below shows you how search engine results positioning for websites improves the more often the URL is tweeted. The numbers outside of the blue bars represent search results positioning.

As you can see, when a website URL is tweeted more than 7,500 times, it’s highly likely that the website will appear on the first page of a Google search results page in the fifth position.

Branded3 examined millions of tweets for this study. However, they only looked at one website. This means the study’s results may have some limitations and might not apply to your business.

Why this study is important

What you should take away from this study is that it’s very important to share website and blog content via social media. It’s not limited to Twitter. Facebook and LinkedIn could also give you excellent results. It all depends on the social media preferences of your customers.

So what’s the benefit to sharing on social media? If you do it right, you’ll get a bump in website traffic as well as inbound links to your website. To be successful, you need to share content on social media that is relevant to your audience.
